Transferring my .co.uk domain to nublue

Understanding .uk Domains & Nominet

What is Nominet?

Nominet is the official registry for all .uk domain extensions (including .co.uk, .org.uk, .me.uk, and .uk). Unlike global registries (like ICANN for .com or .net), Nominet manages the central database for the .uk namespace.

What is a Domain Registrar?

A Domain Registrar is an accredited company—such as Nublue—authorized by Nominet to sell, manage, and hold domain names on behalf of customers.

How .uk Transfers Work: The IPS Tag & Handshake

Unlike global domains that use Auth/EPP codes and transfer locks, .uk domain transfers operate using an IPS Tag system:

  • IPS Tag: Every UK registrar has a unique identifier assigned by Nominet (Nublue's tag is NUBLUE). Changing a domain's tag to NUBLUE signals to Nominet that management of the domain is being moved to Nublue.
  • The Handshake: Once the tag is changed, Nublue must accept the incoming transfer request (the "handshake") to complete the assignment.

How to Transfer a .uk Domain to Nublue

Place the Transfer Order in Nublue billing panel

  1. Log into your Nublue Billing Panel.
  2. Navigate to Domains > Transfer Domains to Us.
  3. Enter your domain name.
  4. Ignore the EPP Code / Auth Code field (this is not required for .uk domains).
  5. Click Add to Cart and complete the checkout process. Note: Submitting this order registers the incoming transfer in our panel. Without this active order, our system cannot complete the transfer handshake.

Update the IPS Tag with Your Current Provide

  1. Log into the control panel of your current domain registrar.
  2. Locate the domain management section and find the option for Change IPS Tag or Transfer Out.
  3. Set the new IPS Tag to: NUBLUE
  4. Confirm the tag change request.

Handshake Completion

Once the current registrar changes the IPS tag to NUBLUE, we would need to manually accept the incoming handshake, which we can see would relate to the order requested in our billing panel.
